Free National Park Day

The National Park Service (NPS) invites everyone to enjoy Free National Park admission for six days in 2025. There are more than 400 parks in the United States, most of which are free to enter. There are approximately 100 parks that usually charge admission and are offering free admission on the following days. 

  • January 20 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 
  • April 19 – First Day of National Park Week 
  • June 19 – Juneteenth National Independence Day 
  • August 4 – Great American Outdoors Act Signing Day 
  • September 27 – National Public Lands Day 
  • November 11 – Veterans Day

The following National Parks, in and close to Maryland, will be free on National Park Days. 

Free National Park Day in Maryland

Antietam National Battlefield, Sharpsburg, MD. Learn about the Battle of Antietam and how it ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. 

Assateague Island National Seashore, Berlin, MD. Explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests and coastal bays. Rest, relax, recreate and enjoy some time on the edge of the continent.

C & O Canal National Historical Park, Williamsport, MD. The canal endures as a pathway for discovering historical, natural, and recreational treasures. The Billy Goat Trail, a popular hiking trail can be accessed from this park. 

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, Baltimore, MD. The fort’s history holds many stories, from the writing of the Star Spangled Banner, through the Civil War to WWII.

Harper’s Ferry. Harper’s Ferry is at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers and three states, MD, VA, and WV; as such, it played a big part during the Civil War. Enjoy miles of hiking trails. 

Free National Park Day in Virginia

Great Falls Park, McClean, VA. 800-acre park along the banks of the Potomac River.

Prince William Forest Park, Triangle, VA. A woodland oasis for camping and hiking. 

Shenandoah National Park, Luray, VA. 200,000 acres filled with wildlife, hiking trails, and history.
