Visit Frederick, Maryland and the Lighted Boats
Visit Frederick, Maryland during the holidays and enjoy the lighted boats in Carroll Creek Park. Frederick is a charming town with 18th and 19th-century architecture, unique shops, restaurants, breweries, distilleries, and art galleries. It was also the intersection of much troop migration during the Civil War.
Sailing Through the Winter Solstice
During the winter, visitors to Frederick are delighted and amazed by the individually designed lighted sailboats in Carroll Creek Park. This floating light installation called “Sailing Through the Winter Solstice” opens in November and is on display through March.
More than two dozen boats are moored in the shallow waters of Carroll Creek. Not only are lights wrapped around the boats, but many are animated and depict familiar or fanciful objects and locations. The boats are connected to a volunteer-led effort to beautify this urban park.
“Sailing Through the Winter Solstice” has become a fundraiser – visitors can vote on their favorite boat, with donations supporting local non-profit organizations. Each boat is tied to a non-profit organization in Frederick County. Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite boats, with each vote costing $5. The money raised on the voting goes directly to support the non-profit affiliated with that boat.

Frederick Holiday Market
You can view the boats day or night. After walking Carroll Creek, visit one of the local restaurants for a meal or treat. There is a Holiday Market on December 14 and 15, 10 am to 4 pm, with local artisans, vendors, live entertainment, and Santa and Mrs. Claus.
