Where to Find the Best Pizza in Maryland

Where can you find the best pizza in Maryland? Some people will tell you that Maryland doesn’t have good quality pizza, but it all depends on individual preference. Chefs and food experts can’t even agree on how many different kinds of pizza there are. Here are the more basic pizza styles.

  • Neapolitan Pizza: Thin, soft crust, mozzarella cheese and baked in a wood-fired oven
  • New York-Style Pizza: Thin crust that is crispy around the edges, foldable, and sturdy enough to hold lots of toppings
  • Chicago Deep-Dish Pizza: Thick, deep crust and layers of tomato sauce, cheese, and toppings. It’s more like a pizza pie.
  • Sicilian Pizza:
  • California-style pizza: Thin crust with non-traditional toppings and fillings.
  • Margherita Pizza: Simple, classic pizza with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.
  • Detroit-Style Pizza: Baked in square pans with a crispy, cheesy crust. Ingredients are layered with cheese on the bottom, toppings, and then tomato sauce.
  • Greek Pizza: Thick, chewy crust with Mediterranean toppings that may include feta cheese, olives, onions, sometimes gyro meat, and spinach.

Eliyahu Kheel from the Facebook group Things to Do in Maryland says,  “I’ve made it my hobby to find the best pizza in Maryland. I’ve tried most of these listed. The best will depend on your preference.” His recommendations are below.

  • NY style: Frank’s pizza and pasta in Baltimore (also has an incredible Detroit style)
  • Neapolitan: Inferno pizza Napoletana in Darnestown (good luck getting in, though. If you don’t want to deal with their absurd policies, Verde in Baltimore)
  • Detroit style: White Rabbit Gastropub in Frederick
  • Chicago style: Rosatis in Frederick
  • Super thin bar pie: Colony Grill in Potomac
  • New Haven: Frank Pepe’s in Bethesda.
  • Old school NY: Paulie Gee’s in Hampden
  • No matter how many people recommend it, don’t bother with Pizza John’s. It’s average at best.
