Kayaking and Bird Watching at Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center
Explore the marshes, inlets, and habitats of the Chesapeake Bay by kayak and do some birdwatching at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (CBEC). CBEC is located on 510 acres in Grasonville, on Prospect Bay. It is a wonderful place to get into a kayak and explore the shoreline, observe birds, wildlife, and the bay’s habitats. Or walk the six miles of hiking trails and use the blinds and observation decks to look for birds.
“The mission of CBEC is to connect people to nature through adventure-based learning that contributes to the conservation of the Chesapeake Bay. Our vision is to transform outdoor enthusiasts into active stewards of the Chesapeake Bay and beyond.”
As you turn onto Discovery Lane, the dirt entrance road, the landscape transforms instantly. Tall pine trees and water grasses line the road, and water views are always within sight. Before reaching the Visitor Center, you’ll spot an observation stand that offers a panoramic view of the marsh. The Visitor Center, staffed with friendly and knowledgeable individuals, is your one-stop destination for trail suggestions, kayak rentals, gear, and any questions you might have. The adjacent certified green building houses restrooms and is available for event rentals. Picnic tables are scattered throughout CBEC, inviting you to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Kayaking at CBEC
Whether you are using your own kayak or renting one, stop at the Visitor Center first. CBEC has single and tandem kayaks, as well as paddleboards, for daily rentals. The fee is $20 per day. Kayaks can go out starting at 9 a.m., and paddlers must check back in by 4:30 p.m.
Parking is available near the Visitor Center. There is a quarter-mile wooded path down to the kayak launch. People who bring their own kayak can drive down to the launch, but there is no parking directly at the launch area. The launch area is fantastic. If you have ever kayaked, you will know that the most challenging part is getting in and launching your kayak, especially if you aren’t a coordinated person. At CBEC, the floating dock is alongside a kayak launcher, making it easy to get in your kayak. From there, you can explore the environs and critters of the bay.
Guided kayaks are available several times yearly and are led by a certified naturalist/kayak guide. No experience is necessary. Spaces are limited, so check the calendar and reserve your space. The fee is $20/person.

Bird Watching at CBEC
The tidal marshes, meadows, ponds, and forests at CBEC provide a rich and diverse habitat for over 200 species of birds. The area is dotted with observation decks and blinds, offering everyone a chance to stand still and marvel at the beauty of these winged creatures. The wooded trails around the pond and through the woods are home to bugs and the birds that feed on them. Visitors from all over the world come to CBEC, like a gentleman from Denver who was thrilled to see and photograph water birds. Take a leisurely stroll and observe the surroundings to see birds flitting from tree to tree or fishing in the water. The CBEC website is a treasure trove of birdwatching resources, waiting to be explored.
Take the Beach Trail from the Lake Trail to access a small sandy beach on Prospect Bay.
CBEC has a mews where it cares for four injured birds of prey that can no longer live in the wild. Ask at the Visitor Center how to find the mews.
