national Oyster Week in Maryland: August 5-11

Calling all seafood lovers to get involved and support the mission of the Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP) to restore the native oyster population of the Chesapeake Bay. The best part? All you have to do is eat delicious food from your favorite shell-recycling restaurants! What a total win-win for everyone!

The ORP has announced that National Oyster Week will be August 5-11 and over 30 local Maryland restaurants are participating. These restaurants are not only providing delicious food to their patrons, they are also aiding in the recovery of the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay by recycling oyster shells. Recycling oyster shells allows more oysters to flourish in the Bay by giving them a healthy environment to grow.

Oyster Recovery Partnership

Since its founding in 1994, the Annapolis-based nonprofit Oyster Recovery Partnership has planted 11.5 billion (yes, that’s billion with a ‘B!’) oysters on 3,000 acres of reef. They are home to the world’s largest shell recycling network, the Shell Recycling Alliance, and annually recycle more than 30,000 bushels of oyster shells. A bushel of oysters typically weighs around 40 pounds and contains roughly 100 oysters. That means every year, 1.2 million pounds of oyster shells are returned to the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.

Below is the list of the Maryland restaurants participating in National Oyster Week. They are part of the network of 200 restaurants and 70 public drop sites in the Mid-Atlantic that are a part of the ORP. To find more information about the Oyster Recovery Partnership and the National Oyster Week, check out the National Oyster Week webpage.
